Look after your Heart: – 8 things you can do – today!

  1. Limit unhealthy fats and avoid cholesterol. Choose Olive or Canola oil and Omega-3
  2. Select low-fat protein sources. Choose fish, lean meat, poultry, low fat dairy products eg skim milk and egg whites.
  3. Eat more fruit and vegetables – go for lots of colours for good variety.
  4. Whole grains. Choose high fibre, whole grain breads and cereals, brown rice, oatmeal and ground flaxseed.
  5. Salt – the recommended daily dosage (from all sources of food) is a maximum of one teaspoon.
  6. Choose reduced-salt products at the supermarket.
  7. Portion size – the size of the palm of your hand for meats.
  8. Plan and substitute – a menu plan allows you to plan simple substitutes, so you can eat heart-healthy.
